| Hoosli would not be who it is today without the assistance of other Ukrainian organizations who share the same visions and goals of promoting their Ukrainian heritage. Ukrainian National Home Association The Ukrainian National Home Association is the oldest secular Ukrainian organization currently in existence in Winnipeg. In Ukrainian the phrase "national home" translates as "narodnyy dim" and the narodnyy dim concept was brought to Canada by the pioneering Ukrainian immigrants. Narodni domy were established throughout western Ukraine in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to serve as vehicles of enlightenment for the Ukrainian populace, which under the yoke of foreign bondage, suffered from an extremely high illiteracy rate. It was under the auspices of the narodni domy that enlightenment did indeed begin to flourish as not only did literacy rates rise due to the tutelage provided there, but socio-cultural activities, choirs, dramatic circles and so on, sprung up around them. Hoosli is proud to make the Ukrainian National Home Association its regular meeting place - its "home". Rusalka Ukrainian Dance Ensemblewww.rusalka.mb.ca Rusalka: mystical, graceful and beautiful. The ensemble has a unique and vibrant style of entertainment and dance, and their repertoire is brimming with dances representing a diverse range of regions, styles and moods. Hoosli and Rusalka have a long shared history of performances, and even shared performers - as knees began to creak, some members of the early years of Rusalka traded in their dance boots and continued to pour out their passion for all things Ukrainian in song. Their most recent collaborations involved Rusalka dancing to live singing, at Hoosli's 35th Anniversary Cabaret; and Hoosli performing at Rusalka's world premiere of "The Legend of The Rusalka." Zoloti Struny Bandura EnsembleZoloti Struny - the bandura ensemble Golden Strings - is a group of accomplished bandura musicians, dedicated to the playing of Ukraine's national instrument. Their repertoire ranges from traditional Ukrainian folk songs to classical music and modern melodies. It is the ambition of the ensemble to carry on the tradition of the bandura and share this important aspect of Ukrainian music with the world. Hoosli is pleased to have collaborated with Zoloti Struny on two previous albums, their 30th and 35th Anniversary performances, as well as other various venues. Olexander Koshetz Choir www.koshetz.org The Olexander Koshetz Choir of Winnipeg is a unique Ukrainian Canadian cultural institution. For half a century, this amateur choir has been a highly successful vehicle for showcasing and propagating the rich Ukrainian choral tradition in Canada and in other parts of the world. In this sense, the ethno-cultural aspect of the choir represents a political dimension that transcends mere choral entertainment. From its beginnings, the choir has been a conscious musical ambassador. Its sense of mission has focused on the fostering of Ukrainian national consciousness and the promotion of the ideal of Ukrainian independent statehood. These objectives have been reflected in the choir's rich repertoire which effectively combines the wide range of Ukrainian choral music -- folk, ritualistic, liturgical, and classical. Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus www.bandura.org Driven by passion, tradition, and history, the all-male Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus preserves and exemplifies its mission as ambassadors of Ukrainian culture, music and the unique 60 stringed instrument, the bandura. Formed in 1918, the UBC continues to make history with ongoing international concerts, a continued education program for youth, new recordings, and new talent. Intense passion for music by our members is united behind the common goal to extend the tradition of our predecessors, kobzari, by producing memorable performances on the world stage. Akord – Ukrainian Men’s Choir of Ottawa www.akordchoir.ca The name AKORD is symbolic of both the richness of Ukrainian choral tradition and the melodious quality of this four-part choir. AKORD originated in 1993 with six, then ‘younger,’ men who shared an interest in Ukrainian liturgical music and assumed as their first challenge Dr. Paul Macenko’s arrangement of the Jerusalem Matins. This Byzantine-style Lenten service was debuted in Ottawa, in 1994, at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine under the direction of Mrs. Slava Shewciw. AKORD continues to celebrate Macenko’s Matins annually in Ukrainian Orthodox and Catholic parishes in Ottawa and elsewhere upon invitation. Canadian Bandurist Capella www.bandurist.com Canadian Bandurist Capella is a forty member Ukrainian male choir accompanied by the unique harp like sound of the sixty-five string bandura. Many of the pieces they perform are steeped in the traditional kobzar art form, dating back to historical Cossack times. Their entertaining style and repertoire consists of epic historic folk songs, sacred music, modern and humorous compositions. Colourful costumes, powerful voices and spectacular harmony are their trademark as the Canadian Bandurist Capella delights audiences across North America. Ukrainian Male Chorus of Edmonton www.ukrainianmalechorus.ca The Ukrainian Male Chorus of Edmonton was formed in 1984 with the objective of developing, promoting and fostering a greater appreciation for the traditions of Ukrainian choral singing. The chorus has performed extensively throughout Alberta as well as in Saskatchewan and British Columbia, including Expo '86 in Vancouver. It has sung the national anthems at Oiler hockey games and at the Canadian Football League's all-star game when it was held in Edmonton. Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Ensemble www.troyanda.comRooted in the colour, beauty, emotion and spirit of the rich and diverse Ukrainian heritage, Troyanda is a vivid and lively interpretation of its roots. It is the meeting of spirited dance, elaborate costumes and traditional Ukrainian music. Grounded in a history of twenty-five years of interpreting the rich Ukrainian culture through dance, Troyanda - like the "bed of roses" its name means in Ukrainian - has truly blossomed. Hoosli's most recent opportunity to share the stage with this talented group was at Troyanda's 25th Anniversary show in February 2005.
