Divine Liturgy – Служба Божа Divine Liturgy – Служба Божа

2009, Conductor: William Solomon

Since the baptism of Ukraine in 988 A.D., its people, and especially the fearless kozaky, have defended and nurtured her Christian faith. The Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus is proud of its origins at St. Vladimir’s College (Minor Seminary) in Roblin, Manitoba, and on the occasion of the chorus’ 40th Anniversary, we are honoured to present the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in the Byzantine rite. We hope that you will enjoy the works and creations of some of the most eminent masters of our Ukrainian liturgical music, as performed by the Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus, featuring Rev. Fr. Alexander Harkavyi.

A selection of beloved religious, historical, patriotic, and romantic songs. Shortly after their 30th anniversary, Hoosli released their most recent recording. This edition was on CD and cassette, composed of 16 songs. Choir consisted of 34 members. God, Ukraine, freedom, love, and beauty - these concepts summarize the themes of most Ukrainian songs. In this album, the Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus proudly presents a selection of beloved religious, historical, patriotic, and romantic songs. Over the many centuries Ukrainians have fought constantly for freedom and independence from invaders and imperialists. This intense struggle is told in the songs from many generations of freedom fighters. And the love songs speak for themselves.

Encore - Біс Encore - Біс

1998, Conductor: William Solomon

An album filled with songs of the gallant kozaky and ballads that speak to the heart. Just before the end of the millennium, Hoosli released their sixth album. This edition was on cassette and CD, composed of 17 songs. Choir consisted of 41 members. The rollicking songs of the gallant kozaky are blended with gentle ballads that speak to the heart. Passionate lyrics woven with lush harmonies relay the deep emotions that Ukrainians have expressed through their music as individuals, and as a people. The struggle for freedom from foreign oppression, the sentiments of bittersweet love, the pastoral beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, and the love of one's homeland are just a few of the universal themes that all listeners will appreciate.

In 1991, in celebration of their 20th anniversary, Hoosli released this cassette, their fourth recording. Composed of 12 songs. Choir consisted of 36 members. A world famous painting by the noted artist Repin depicted a group of boisterous Kozaks writing a threatening letter to the Sultan; they had served the Sultan well and now wished to return to their homeland. In no uncertain terms they explained to the Sultan that they in no way feared either him or his hordes and homeward they would go - and if he didn't like it, he knew what he could do!

Steppe of Ukraine, far-spreading prairie,
Thy harvests bring thee far renown,
But Glory yet more legendary
In memories of the past comes down,
The deeds thy Cossack sons once wrought
Who worshipped liberty and Thee
And sprinkled with their blood so free
Thy vales and gullies where they fought.

Hoosli I - Гуслі I Hoosli I - Гуслі I

1976, Conductor: Walter Zulak

An album drawn from our rich Ukrainian choral heritage of folk and religious music. In 1976, the first recording of Hoosli was released. This edition was on an LP, composed of 12 songs. Choir consisted of 24 members. In expanding the activities of the St. Vladimir's College Alumni Choir, a need was felt to develop a new name... brief, distinct, yet meaningful. And so the name 'Hoosli' was chosen. It gave birth to the group's first album. The name, unfamiliar to many, is that of an ancient instrument similar to a zither. The instrument represents versatility. For it produces not only music, but a feeling as well... the gentle strains of an attitude... the fire of a belief. That's precisely what the group Hoosli does.
